The danger of ignoring strong emotions is not limited to therapy. Repressing them can be like putting your thumb over a hole to hold back a geyser: the pressure may emerge somewhere else.
Sometimes that happens in the body. People can experience severe stomach pain, dizziness, or other physical symptoms that are entirely real and can disrupt their lives. It’s always essential to get a Medical evaluation when experiencing physical symptoms, but when doctors cannot find a sufficient medical cause, they often refer patients for psychological treatment. Keeping painful feelings out of awareness can itself be stressful, and that stress can also worsen symptoms when a medical condition is present.
Strong emotions may express themselves in other ways, too. Someone who cannot recognize how frightened or hurt they feel may instead find themselves overwhelmed by anger, anxiety, or difficulties in relationships.
In therapy, repeatedly passing over a strong feeling means losing the chance to understand it. That is especially important when the feeling arises in the relationship with the therapist. Making room for it may be uncomfortable, but it can reveal something important about what the person is experiencing and why it keeps returning.
